Closing 2014, welcoming 2015

It was perhaps the most challenging year for me, the year had a good start, in the middle was rough, and at the end was bittersweet.

The good thing about this year is I survived it, my family survived it, we beat all the odds, with all our sacrifices, despite of me being away from them, still manage to help them during down times. My father had a double operation this year, it was a tough one for him, and he fought his fears and beat the hell out of the sickness, and I’m just so glad seeing him on pictures and our online chats glowing these days. We had to come up with some money for his two operations, gladly I was able to get extra jobs after work, though it was exhausting for me, but seeing my father well is just a great reward from all those sacrifices we all made as a family. And for that 2014 did well for us, and I thank God for giving me an awesome family.

It was also a fun year for me, although I only travelled once, out of town this year, but jumping from one country to another, by plane and by train for maximum of 10 days in Amsterdam-Paris-Nantes-Barcelona, insert concerts and cool music festival in between, it was tiring but definitely fun! Seeing Catpower, Haim, Chvrches, The National, Pixies and more… Couldn’t ask for more! Way to pay off all the hard work.

It was also a sad year of losing love ones, it’s just so hard to read messages about losing a relative whom you knew. A sad year of lost planes, and plane crashes, wars and all that crazy shit we hear on the news , that we’ll hope next year won’t have much.

Lately I had to mourn for my best friend, my princess, my dog PJ, she was my best pal, whenever I’m home, I always have to cuddle her when I’m about to sleep. Another best memory of PJ was, one time I cried alone in my room, she went up, sitting on my lap and started to lick away my tears away. Like what they always say, all dogs go to heaven, I hope she’s happy up there, I just felt sorry for not able to come home this year, I know she’s always looking forward on seeing me. But I had to let go, and just cherish those beautiful moments with her.

Despite all the sadness, there are things that I’m grateful for this year, developing a new style on my artworks, despite only having a short time finishing up all of them, I’m just happy to be able to do the works that I love doing.

I’m also happy to get back on track, although part of this is to get my back pain at ease, cuz I have sciatic nerve pain, and it’s a good stress reliever from work. Also happy to finally get myself a bike, I’ve always wanted to own a dahon, and they finally arrived here in dubai.

Hope next year will be a good one, I’m not wishing that much, but I will try to reach some goals though.

I’m wishing everyone to have a blast this 2015!!!

9 of Spades for Creative Cards Project

Lately I got invited by Digital Abstracts to be part of the list of artists, participating for the Creative Cards Project, among the lists were some of the great artists, illustrators and designers of today’s industry, and i was lucky to be picked and be part of this project. I was late on picking out a card, so I end up choosing the ones that were left, so I picked 9 of spades, cuz I figured the more the merrier, and prolly be more challenging for me to occupy enough space for the 9 spades.  I googled and look through some definitions about spades and what 9 of spades is all about, I stumbled upon too many definition, so I ended up coming up with something on my own. I wanted my card to have it’s own personality, something mysterious, she could be dark but has a mixture of vividness to her, like all the definitions of the card, she’s very much a mystery to everyone.

Here are some of the pics and screen shots of the creative process.

I usually start with finding some references for angles of the faces, and where the shadows are placed, here’s one of the pics I got from a hair magazine, both useful reference for haircuts and drawings, hehe.

Sketching it up!!! =D

Done! ready for vectoring!

Only a few people love using illustrator, and I’m among those few, haha!

I wanted a very decorative background for my card, so I started making some ornaments for it, for me, the background is as important as the foreground.

The best thing about creating decorative ornament patterns is repetition, just make one design, flip it horizontally, vertically, duplicate, and wallah! your pattern is served! =D

Here you go! background done, the colors during the process is not always final, this is the best about illustrator, I could easily change the colors, re-size the objects without pixelating them, deal with that PS! booyah!!! LOL!

Outlining the foreground. I don’t use ordinary stroke for the pen tool and brush, there are variety of strokes to choose from.

There she goes!

Like what I said, the colors are not always final during the process, I’m a girl, I easily change my mind through it,nyahahahaha!

I’m always excited to apply lights and shadows on my work, they always bring them to life.

9 of SPADES!!! It will be up soon at this site:
