Say it’s too late to say “Hello 2019” I haven’t been able to write a blog since…end of 2014 ey?! hahaha, anyways, I might be writing more from now on, I miss this long and personal, quite opinionated blogging type of expressing ourselves, I’ve been off from the social media faves of microblogging, FB, IG and Twitter, I might come back one of these days, but I’m still busy figuring out things, dealing with clients despite the market for illustration/graphic design freelancing is declining in this region, due to the rise of social media video content, and some have been saving their budget, so it’s a little bit worrisome, it hit me with some financial catastrophe, hahaha, yep! been dealing for it since last year, but things had been like a lifeline monitor lately, so for now it’s still beating and breathing, and hopefully positive things will come, fingers cross that things will be a-OK. Anywhoo while I’m still busy with stuff, here’s my website, added more content to it, I’m hoping to add a bit more, probably animation? yep! hopefully soon, ciao for now! and btw this blog is now connected to my webbie, and vice-versa
It was perhaps the most challenging year for me, the year had a good start, in the middle was rough, and at the end was bittersweet.
The good thing about this year is I survived it, my family survived it, we beat all the odds, with all our sacrifices, despite of me being away from them, still manage to help them during down times. My father had a double operation this year, it was a tough one for him, and he fought his fears and beat the hell out of the sickness, and I’m just so glad seeing him on pictures and our online chats glowing these days. We had to come up with some money for his two operations, gladly I was able to get extra jobs after work, though it was exhausting for me, but seeing my father well is just a great reward from all those sacrifices we all made as a family. And for that 2014 did well for us, and I thank God for giving me an awesome family.
It was also a fun year for me, although I only travelled once, out of town this year, but jumping from one country to another, by plane and by train for maximum of 10 days in Amsterdam-Paris-Nantes-Barcelona, insert concerts and cool music festival in between, it was tiring but definitely fun! Seeing Catpower, Haim, Chvrches, The National, Pixies and more… Couldn’t ask for more! Way to pay off all the hard work.
It was also a sad year of losing love ones, it’s just so hard to read messages about losing a relative whom you knew. A sad year of lost planes, and plane crashes, wars and all that crazy shit we hear on the news , that we’ll hope next year won’t have much.
Lately I had to mourn for my best friend, my princess, my dog PJ, she was my best pal, whenever I’m home, I always have to cuddle her when I’m about to sleep. Another best memory of PJ was, one time I cried alone in my room, she went up, sitting on my lap and started to lick away my tears away. Like what they always say, all dogs go to heaven, I hope she’s happy up there, I just felt sorry for not able to come home this year, I know she’s always looking forward on seeing me. But I had to let go, and just cherish those beautiful moments with her.
Despite all the sadness, there are things that I’m grateful for this year, developing a new style on my artworks, despite only having a short time finishing up all of them, I’m just happy to be able to do the works that I love doing.
I’m also happy to get back on track, although part of this is to get my back pain at ease, cuz I have sciatic nerve pain, and it’s a good stress reliever from work. Also happy to finally get myself a bike, I’ve always wanted to own a dahon, and they finally arrived here in dubai.
Hope next year will be a good one, I’m not wishing that much, but I will try to reach some goals though.
I’m wishing everyone to have a blast this 2015!!!
Way way back, before I started collecting vinyl records, before all mp3’s can easily be downloaded online, I collected cassette tapes, made mixtapes (for myself), recorded songs from the radio that are not available from the record shop, all of these for the love of music. I thought when I stopped collecting cassette tapes and CDs, it will be the end of it, cuz the booming of online music, made it easier for me to carry them wherever i may go, cuz unlike before, going away for college was a bit of a hassle, I can’t live without music, it’s just my ultimate addiction, I used to have at least brought 15 of my most listened to collection whenever it’s time for me to leave, going back to my dorm away from home.
When the mp3 was very much available online, I was like hooked on downloading every single, every album from my old faves and new discoveries. After college, when I started working me and my ex-roomie, had this late night Internet cafe hanging out session, where we’re just there downloading everything we needed to download, even music videos from the bands and artists that we like. It was a once a week session that we have, since the internet back then was quite expensive, and Internet cafés were the only cheapest access we could get, without restrictions, unlike our former work place, even the owner of the Internet cafe that we always go to, recognized us and our usual request to transfer and burn all the stuff we just downloaded from the internet.
Everything was just available online, as years have gone by, it was easy and way more faster than before. When I moved here in Dubai, I still continued downloading stuff online, the internet is even way more faster. But there was this re-occurring thought that I had before, that there was something more when you buy a CD or a Cassette tape, it’s not only about paying the artist or the band for their effort, it’s also something that it kind of gives more value to the stuff you listen to, even if you say you bought the music from iTunes, it’s still doesn’t make sense if you buy an mp3 when it’s already available online for free, it’s bad I know, everybody’s doing it, bands and artists these days don’t mind, it even helped launched some of their careers, hey! the music industry didn’t die when the music was free for online downloading, the only thing that died was the old MTV, when reality tv got more airings than the music videos.
One day I started having this desire on getting back into my hobby, collecting albums from my favorite bands and artists. Cassette tapes are gone, CDs are still alive and well, I did started collecting some CDs back, I have a few of them here, but I was having this urge to collect something more valuable and authentic. I’ve been seeing these record players online, and It made me remember when I was young, we use to have this old record player back home, my uncle and older cousins used to play some of the old stuff, and the record that hit me that time was Queen, I was really into it. The player, the old records we use to have, it was not owned by one, it was for the whole family, I could only recall that it was fun once they turned the thing on and played all the records. Dunno what happened to it, I kept asking my mom before, but I guess it was thrown out because it wasn’t working anymore, but I still saw some of the vinyl records misplaced on some corners in the house.
So one day I decided to buy a record player, and scout out some 2nd hand shops here for some old vinyl records. It did something to me, not just for the sake of collecting, but it did bring back such old memories of fun, the way you have to place the needle on the record, the way it turned, and the way it played, it’s something that I couldn’t actually explain, but simply appreciate the simplicity of it, and how that flat circled shape thing could produce such pure music once the needle touches it and spins. Some people may think, oh it’s just another hipster thingy, or it’s just impractical, cuz I could have just downloaded some stuff online, well yeah, they have a point, and it’s just quite a timing for me since most hipsters are into vinyl records these days, it’s not a bad thing though, only problematic people put matters on things that doesn’t really matter or doesn’t bother me at all.
Like what I’ve said, I’ve been collecting music for my whole life, I have playlists modes from time to time, this collection of vinyls that I have is just me trying to get back into my old hobby, and I wanted to get back on that thrill of having these records available on the record shop or at amazon, waiting to own one, it was the same thrill that I had before whenever an album that I was looking forward to was already available on cassette tape, saving my whole week allowance back in high school, and buying the tapes by the end of the week, that feeling of having it on my own hands, and playing it for the first time, the only difference today is that vinyl records are way more pricey and perhaps it’s just an upgrade from my old collection, and it’s just makes me feel good to get back on this hobby. Art is my main priority, MUSIC is my mistress.
I had to admit, the power of social media, micro blogging, insta-posting has made me lazier to create a blog these days, even updating my page on facebook and updating my website and other stuff that needs to be updated has been on a hiatus, it’s either I’m busy, or the only time left for me is to lay down and sleep, cuz I badly need it these days. I remember, during the time when multiply was the hit of the town, I got hooked on posting, whole entire albums of pictures and blogging, it continued through facebook, but when the micro blogging of just saying brief stuff about your opinions or what you’re doing or what you like has become a practice of mine, the whole blogging thingy has been demolished, out of my busy schedule. With my instagram account, I could just post one pic and then put a bit of description and some hashtags, and then we’re good, but the essence of blogging isn’t there, it’s just posting of some stuff and waiting to get likes, I do admit, I’m guilty of that shit, but due to busy schedules and all, I couldn’t find the time to post blogs, meaning the regular blogs where you write like an entire article about anything you think of, or stuff you think people should be getting into, so my way of informing people these days about what I’m into, is just posting some videos from YouTube or take pics or videos and insta-post them and that’s it, without explaining why I love these stuff, or why I hated them or telling them what technique or what drove me to draw some stuff. Now I wanna go back and start writing blogs again, I seriously miss this, and I wanna revive my blog site, and even wanna make my website alive and be up to date once again. I feel like I locked myself up for a while, hibernating for almost a year without writing. Consider this one as the first, hope I could follow up more posts soon, let’s see😜.
Here’s my original sketch of the Half Cab work I did for the SOLE DXB event here in Dubai last weekend, here’s a Wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vans_Half_Cab on the history about the Vans Half Cab, to understand my interpretation more further. =D
Finally!!! the New Era Introducing tour was here in Dubai, last Wednesday night April 25, 2012, and it lasted yesterday, we finally get to see the other finalists from around the globe, including ours, and Lina Al-Amoudi, who won the grand prize. And we also got the book, where our caps were in it! =D
Ella with her cap!
One of my fave!
My weird turtle cap here! hehehe
Another mystery and a case of a stolen art. Victoria Viray’s cap got lost during the Barcelona exhibit, some dude really dig her cap, but still, he stole a work of art.
Flordeliza Pesigan and her lovely sculpture of the New Era cap.
Mark Ganzon’s cap, I think half or more than half of the 10 finalists for the UAE team are all filipinos.
Lina Al-Amoudi’s winning cap entry, AWESOME!!!
A photo with Lina, such a very down to earth person.
Us 4, UAE/ Philippines rep! hehehe!
Last last weekend, April 20-21 2012, held the first Comicon here in Dubai, and was not only catered to dxb peeps alone, it was for the whole Middle East. Surprisingly the event was packed for 2 days straight, people were coming in and out non-stop. For a year of waiting, finally it happened, and people from other parts of ME came to just experience the most talked about Comicon in the US, it was also a dream come true of mine, cuz I’ve been wanting to experience comicon myself, and it happened, what’s even better was that I am one of the exhibitors along with my artist friend, Ella Orencillo, who was busy airbrushing the custom made shirts. Our prints, posters and postcards were selling like hotcakes, and aside from that, we made people put a smile on their faces. The experience was definitely the most awesome weekend ever here in UAE, and I hope next year will be bigger, better, wider, and you might see me finally doing cosplay, hehe, see the pics I took below, on what was going on during ME Comicon 2012.
Our Prints, posters, postcards and shirts, next year we’re planning on making more, and most probably more fan art goodies, inspired by comic book and famous movie characters using our own style of illustrations.
Our booth, and Ella doing here own thing, airbrushing custom made shirts.
First one who wore my shirt during the Comicon event, awesome!!!
i should get my very own lightsaber, for self defense, hehehe
My friend, the Jedi! LOL!
One of my fave characters from the V for Vendetta graphic novel.
Bleach peeps! too bad I didn’t see Ichigo around =(
Mmmm-mmm… Jason Mamoa!!! nom!nom!
John Rhys- Davies a.k.a. Gimli from the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
Laurie Holden from “The Walking Dead” tv series, I luv her character, Andrea, I luv her character more on the graphic novel, I’m still wondering what’s going to happen on the tv series since it’s going on the different direction.
The best part of the event EVER!!!!!! YES!!!! hehehehe
Here are the before and after images of my DOA exhibit entries, and the stories behind them, enjoy!
Both of my entries depicts my personal struggle, but of course it’s not a self portrait, it’s more of an inner self reflection. For “Internal Escapade”, It’s about how I wanted out of a situation, and since in reality, I can’t let myself risk everything, so I ended up having an inner escapade through my imagination, I know I can get all through this, I’ll just think of some happy thoughts and imagine stuff that makes my worries go away for a while.
Again, another personal struggle reflecting on this work of art, sometimes we all want to disappear for once, just to get away from reality. I did took 3 days off while working on my DOA exhibit entries stuff, never thought of the perfect timing to polish “Dissolve” during my short leave, it could be a coincidence.
These works are now displayed at Metropolitan Gallery Café, at Kyoto Japan, as part of the DOA exhibit, if you’re somewhere in Kyoto, please drop by and the rest of the members’ works, and for those outside JP, i’ll try to ask for some pictures taken from the event opening =)
A sneak peek for Designers of Asia, Kyoto Japan exhibit entries, I have 2 entries for the entire exhibit, I totally forgot how many galleries in Kyoto these 2 will be shown, along with the entries of some of the great designers of Asia, but I’m totally excited to see the pictures and how things will go, even if I’m not gonna make it there, It’s always been my dream to come to Japan, I’m jealous for my prints, since they get to be there, roaming around Kyoto, I guess they’ve reached their destination by now, lucky prints!
